Give this fruit tree warm, in-ground conditions and it grows vigorously; because it's uniquely dwarf-sized, it also thrives container-grown, topping out at just 8 to 10 feet — compact enough to move between a sunny patio, a kitchen, or a sunroom as the seasons change. It flowers before fruiting, typically within its first couple of growing seasons once established, and the large flower drops away as the bananas begin to develop.

The leaves grow up to 4 feet long and are extremely lush, providing shade and a real sense of privacy wherever it's planted. New leaves often emerge with a reddish tinge before settling into the fresh green that makes up most of the plant, adding some extra visual interest as it grows. Because it's tropical at heart, plan on bringing container-grown trees indoors or providing frost protection once temperatures drop toward the low 20s°F — a bit of winter planning keeps it coming back strong each year.
