Why Hass Avocado Trees?

Hass is the variety behind the vast majority of avocados sold in U.S. grocery stores — and this grafted, fast-growing tree brings it home, producing in just 3-4 years instead of the decade (or longer) seed-grown trees can take, if they fruit true to type at all.

The tree grows into a dense, broad-canopied evergreen with glossy, deep-green oval leaves, reaching 15-20 feet tall and 5-8 feet wide once established outdoors. Grown in a container, it tops out at a manageable 5-7 feet, making it a natural fit for a sunny patio or deck corner — and because it thrives in a pot down to Zone 3, most of the country can grow one, even well outside the Zone 9-11 range it needs to live outdoors year-round.

Hass trees bloom in late winter into spring, and the fruit that follows takes months to mature. It won't ripen while still on the branch, so you can leave it hanging until you're ready and pick on your own schedule. One of Hass's most useful traits shows up right before harvest: the pebbly skin shifts from green to a deep purplish-black as it ripens, so you'll always know it's ready by sight — no guesswork. Inside, the flesh is rich, creamy, and nutty, good in guacamole, avocado toast, salads, or straight off the spoon.

This tree is self-fruitful on its own, though planting a Cold Hardy Avocado Tree nearby as a pollinizer will boost your yield. Once established, a single Hass can keep producing fruit for 40 years or more.

Why Trees.com?

Every Hass we ship starts as a cutting taken from a mature tree already proven to produce fruit, then grafted onto hardy rootstock — the same technique commercial growers use — before it ever leaves our nursery.

Skip the guesswork: because your tree is grafted, not grown from seed, it's guaranteed to produce true Hass fruit, not something different from what you ordered.
Backed by our Alive & Thrive Guarantee™: if your tree doesn't take root and thrive, we'll make it right.
Real support after the sale: our Plant Experts are a call away if you have questions about planting, watering, or troubleshooting once your tree arrives.

1. Planting: Although partial sun will suffice, to produce avocados in abundance, make sure you choose a planting area that gives your Hass Avocado Tree full sun. Spacing with the Hass is important as well. Give your avocado tree about 15 feet of space from other trees and plants.

The best months for planting are typically March through June, depending on where you live. Dig a hole twice as large as the tree's root system, carefully plant the tree and cover the roots. Tamp the soil down around the tree's root system to remove all air pockets. Using a small diameter wooden pole, stake the tree with a garden stake and tie the tree to the pole loosely using cotton twine. Finally, apply 3 inches of bark chips around the tree to help with moisture retention and prevent the growth of weeds.

If planting in a container, use a cactus or citrus soil mix that is well-draining in a container that is slightly larger than the current one.

Note: This product grows best in well-draining soil. When you receive your plant, you may notice small, white beads or rocks in the soil - this medium is added to increase drainage and keep your plant happy and healthy!

2. Watering: When planting, water your young avocado tree to be sure it is sufficiently hydrated. Otherwise allow the soil to dry between waterings. A thorough watering once weekly is generally all your avocado needs, however.

While the roots prefer to stay on the dry side, avocado leaves love humidity. Indoor Avocados will do best if misted daily, especially when you are running heat during cooler months. You can also use a humidifier or fill your pot's saucer with rocks and add water; place your plant on the rocks ensuring the bottom of the pot is above the water line.

3. Pruning: Prune the Haas avocado lightly to maintain appearance or to remove damaged branches during the first few years after planting. Pruning should be done in the spring.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilize the Hass Avocado tree in the spring, summer, fall and winter, after the tree has been planted for one year using a well-balanced fertilizer.

Trees.com Pro Tip: Your Hass will survive temperatures down to 20°F, but cooler temps can be stressful, especially for younger plants. We suggest adding an extra layer of protection with a frost blanket on younger trees if your temperatures get cooler than 30°F.

Do I need two trees to get fruit?

No — Hass is self-fruitful, so a single tree can produce avocados entirely on its own. That said, planting a pollinizer tree nearby, like a Cold Hardy Avocado, will boost your yield if you have the space and want a bigger harvest.

What temperatures can my Hass Avocado Tree handle?

Hass tolerates brief dips into the high 20s°F once established, but sustained cold below 30°F can stress the tree, especially when young. We recommend covering younger trees with a frost blanket any time temperatures are expected to drop below 30°F.

How long does it take for an Avocado plant to bear fruit?

How long your Avocado plant takes to bear fruit depends on how old your plant is to begin with. Avocados smaller than 3 feet tall might start to produce small fruits that will drop prematurely. When your tree is around 4-5 feet tall and becomes established, you should have regular harvests that increase with age.

Is an Avocado plant an indoor plant?

Avocados grow best outdoors in their native range (Zones 9-11) , but can be happy indoors, provided that their needs are being met. They prefer warm temperatures, humidity and lots of sunlight!

What is the difference between a Hass Avocado and a regular Avocado?

The Hass Avocado is the most common kind you will find in grocery stores. It's known for its dark skin when ripe and small pit. Other kinds of Avocado will have slightly different flavors and sizes.

How tall do Hass Avocados grow?

Outdoors, this fruit-bearing tree will reach heights of 15 to 20 feet and a width of 5 to 8 feet at full maturity. But when it's container-grown, it will reach a height between 5 to 7 feet, allowing easy harvesting.

When do you harvest Hass Avocados?

Generally, you can harvest your fruit between February and September.

When do you water Hass Avocados?

When planting, water your young Avocado Tree to be sure it is sufficiently hydrated. Otherwise, allow the soil to dry between waterings. A thorough watering once weekly is generally all your Avocado needs.
