Ornamental Grasses for Sale at Trees.com
Ornamental grass covers a wide range here: knee-high clumps for edging a bed, mid-size grasses that fill a border, and tall ornamental grass that reaches well overhead by late summer. You'll also find grass-like groundcovers such as liriope for shady spots. If you've settled on the look and are deciding which variety fits your yard, the details below should close the gap.
How to Choose an Ornamental Grass for Your Zone
Check your growing zone first, because this category varies more than most. Little bluestem handles Zone 3 winters, while purple fountain grass is hardy only in Zones 9 through 11 and gets grown as an annual across most of the country. Both are worth planting, but you want to know which one you're buying.
Sun comes next. Most ornamental grasses want full sun and get floppy and thin without it. If your spot gets a few hours at best, liriope and Japanese sedge are the better bet, along with other shade-tolerant plants that hold up under tree canopy.
Tall Ornamental Grasses for Screening and Structure
For height, look at the 4-to-8-foot range and above. Maiden grass and pampas grass both form large clumps that soften a fence line or block a view through the growing season, though they die back in winter, so treat them as a seasonal screen rather than a year-round one.
Karl Foerster is the exception worth knowing. It grows upright and narrow instead of spreading wide, which makes it useful in tight beds and along walkways where a wider grass would crowd the path.
Low-Maintenance Grasses That Handle Deer and Dry Spells
Much of this collection carries deer-resistant and drought-tolerant tags, which is why grasses show up so often in front yards where nothing else survives. Pink muhly grass and switch grass both hold their own once established.
They pair well with sun-loving flowering shrubs and other drought-tolerant plants if you're planting a bed that needs to survive on rainfall. For fuller beds, browse the wider perennial plants selection.
