Nellie Stevens Holly Shrub

Plant Nellie Stevens Holly Shrubs about 5 to 6 feet apart when creating a privacy screen or living hedge. This spacing gives each shrub room for root development while helping the plants fill in together over time.

Nellie Stevens Holly grows well outdoors in Zones 6–9, and we don’t recommend growing outside of this range.

Nellie Stevens Holly grows well in full sun to partial shade. For the best berry production and dense foliage, choose a planting spot that receives 6 hours of sunlight each day.

Yes, Nellie Stevens Holly produces bright red berries that stand out against its glossy, dark green foliage in fall and winter. Unlike many holly varieties, it doesn't need a male pollinator nearby to set fruit; it produces berries on its own. The berries also attract birds, adding seasonal interest to your landscape during the cooler months.

Water is based on a range of factors including soil type, climate, and weather. In general, water twice a week for the first growing season, adjusting based on your local conditions.  When the soil is dry 2" down, it's time to water again.

Once established, Nellie Stevens holly needs extra water during extended dry periods or in climates with dry, warm winters. Adding mulch around the base helps conserve moisture and insulates roots.

Nellie Stevens Holly Shrub typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide at maturity. Its final size depends on spacing, sunlight, soil type, and whether you prune it as a hedge or let it grow into its natural pyramidal shape.

The best time to plant Nellie Stevens Holly depends on your zone. In cooler zones, plant in spring, after the threat of frost has passed. In warmer zones, plant in fall, about 4-6 weeks before your first frost date. Planting during these milder seasons gives the roots time to settle before summer heat or winter cold.

The American Holly is a native species that supports the local ecosystem, needs a male and female for berries, has a slower growth rate, and may discolor during winter. Nellie Steven is a hybrid with improved landscape features, like a faster growth rate, deep green color throughout winter, and the ability to produce berries with only a female.
