Longan: The Tree with the Dragon's Eyes

Rising skyward, the ancient Longan Tree is a thing of beauty. Originating in Southeast Asia, its thick branches stretch high and wide, hoisting countless green leaves that create its impressive canopy. Reaching heights of 40 feet, it makes a great specimen or shade tree and is the perfect center piece for your yard. Complementing the deep green color of its leathery leaves is the Longan Fruit itself. Hanging in heavy clusters, the reddish brown fruit are perfectly round and when shelled said to resemble the eyes of a dragon.

He's not Lychee, He's my Brother

If you enjoy the sweet, candy-like taste of the Lychee, you'll love the Longan fruit. Similar in size and appearance to the Lychee, it's been nicknamed 'Lychee's Little Brother'. But the Longan has a sweet fruit flavor all its own. Its whitish, almost translucent flesh has an unparalleled sweetness with a hint of musk. The fruit is nearly perfectly spherical, somewhat larger than a grape and has been compared in taste to a mango. Its incredible flavor lends itself well to use in desserts, candies, marmalades-even soups. But the best way to enjoy the Longan is right off the tree, fresh out of the easy-to-remove shell.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: You'll want to plant your Longan Tree in an area with full sun. Dig a hole twice the size of your Longan Tree's root ball. Plant in well-draining, rich soil and backfill the hole.

Pro tip: Planting on a mound will promote drainage and prevent waterlogged roots.

2. Watering: Water regularly within the tree’s first year of being established. Once established, Longan Trees are drought-tolerant, but continue to water when the soil is dry, especially during fruiting seasons in spring and summer to ensure optimal growth and fruit production.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize with a balanced formula during growing season.

4. Pruning: Trim any dead branches during winter after the fruit is harvested.

5. Pollination: Because the Longan Tree is self-pollinating, it can produce fruit on its own.
