Tropical Fruit Trees

Choosing Tropical Fruit Trees from Trees.com

Most of the fruit trees in this collection are grafted rather than grown from seed, so they fruit years sooner than a seedling would. What's here ranges from everyday citrus like Meyer lemon and satsuma to less common picks like lychee, guava, and dragon fruit, for growers in warm zones and for anyone willing to move a pot indoors each winter.

Start With Your Growing Zone

Most of what you'll find here is rated for Zones 9 to 11, which covers South Florida, the Gulf Coast, southern Arizona, and much of coastal California. If your winters run colder, start with the cold-tolerant filter rather than the variety you want most. Citrus is usually the easiest entry point, and the citrus trees selection includes options that stretch further north than a mango or soursop will.

Which Exotic Fruit Trees Work in a Pot

Container growing is what puts exotic fruit trees within reach outside Zones 9 to 11. A dwarf or patio-sized tree spends the warm months outside and moves under cover before the first frost. Compact varieties show up across the banana trees, mango trees, and avocado trees collections, and dragon fruit, pineapple, and Meyer lemon all take to a pot readily.

What to Check Before You Order a Tropical Fruit Tree from Trees.com

Three details settle most of the remaining questions. Almost every tree in this collection is self-pollinating, so a single plant will fruit on its own. Mature heights range from under four feet to well over twenty, which is worth checking against the spot you have in mind. Many tropical fruit trees for sale here are available in multiple sizes, with some arriving at 6 to 7 feet tall in pots up to 15 gallons because they're grown on at our Fort Mill nursery until they're ready to ship. Citrus trees are also offered in a range of sizes, including smaller trees, so be sure to check the available size for your selected variety before ordering.
